Northern Lights is dedicated "to my family and our magical summers in Michigan's Upper Peninsula." Unlike the Diana Rittenhouse mystery series and Flames of Summer, both set in the warm nurturing south, Northern Lights turns to a cold unforgiving climate where the summer is short and the winters are brutal.
Yet during the gentle season when the land comes alive with wildflowers and blueberries, when Lake Superior turns welcoming under the July sky, the beauty of the setting is made more intense by the fact that its life is so achingly brief. I spent my summers there during my stormy adolescent years. Those vacations were suspended in time and dedicated to dreaming, imagining romance and trying to understand the woman I would someday become.
